As some of you may know I am currently living in South Korea in a very temporary space. My husband's job offered us the opportunity for him to work in South Korea for a year. The catch, since it was only a year we didn't get to bring any of our household things, we moved with the luggage we could take on our flight and settled into a pre-furnished apartment close to his work.
My sewing machine was my carry on item on the plane, and my personal item was my cat and sewing companion, Milo. You can really see my life priorities in that previous sentence :). I filled one of our checked duffle bags with sewing tools, supplies, and fabric.
Our apartment came with a desk in the bedroom and this promptly became the sewing desk. I was able to snag an ironing board from another tenant who was moving away. I placed this in front of the floor to ceiling windows in our bedroom, which give the space some great light.
I was cutting fabric on our small dining room table, which even with the addition of bed risers was not ideal. And I did not love having to clean off the dining room table and take it off the bed risers daily. Luckily our landlords are very easy to work with and want us to be comfortable in our temporary home, so a simple request rewarded me with a second desk in the bedroom, enter again...bed risers to the rescue.
This has been my sewing setup for the past several months, with several more months to go. And while this is not my dream space I am grateful to have a sewing space to call my own, a space that I can leave messy and spread out my projects on.
The moral of this story is that your space doesn't have to be large, or beautiful, or even permanent to serve it's purpose. To allow you to be creatively fulfilled and create beautiful things. What you create, how you create it, and what that creative process makes you feel, is more important than the space that you create in.
I would love to hear about your creative space in the comments below.
